Every judo journey begins with a single step onto the mat. For many, that first step is the hardest. Walking into a dojo can feel intimidating—learning unfamiliar techniques, being thrown for the first time, and pushing through moments of frustration and self-doubt. Yet, every practice attended, every fall taken, and every lesson learned builds something far greater than physical skill. Judo teaches perseverance, humility, resilience, and the courage to keep showing up, even when progress feels slow. Over time, those small acts of commitment transform beginners into confident, capable judoka.
At Okubo Judo Club, we are fortunate to witness these transformations every week. Belt promotions are more than a recognition of technical ability—they celebrate the dedication, character, and perseverance that each student demonstrates throughout their journey. This month, we are proud to recognize two exceptional members of our dojo.
Congratulations, Gideon!
It has been a true honor and privilege to watch Gideon grow as both a judoka and a young man. His judo journey began as a child under the guidance of Makimoto Sensei, and we are incredibly grateful that he has continued that journey with us at Okubo Judo Club.
Today, we are proud to congratulate Gideon on earning his Brown Belt—a milestone that reflects years of dedication, perseverance, and hard work.
Gideon approaches every practice with unwavering intensity, a strong work ethic, and an infectious enthusiasm that inspires everyone around him. He embraces challenges with determination, encourages his teammates through his positive attitude, and consistently demonstrates the discipline and resilience that define the spirit of judo.

We are incredibly honored to celebrate Mr. Mohammad on his promotion to Shodan (First-Degree Black Belt).
From the moment Mr. Mohammad joined our dojo, he brought with him a wealth of judo knowledge, experience, and quiet confidence. Yet, despite his impressive background, he chose to begin his time with us wearing a white belt. His only wish was to introduce his two children to the beautiful art of judo and allow them to experience the same lessons and values that had shaped his own life. It didn’t take long for Takeuchi Sensei to see that his humble demeanor was masking his technical knowledge and she suggested his promotion.
Training with Mr. Mohammad is truly a privilege. His technical skill, timing, and composure reveal the experience of a seasoned judoka, but what leaves the greatest impression is not his ability—it is his character. He approaches every practice with humility, patience, and genuine respect for everyone on the mat, regardless of age or rank. He teaches not by seeking recognition, but by setting an example through his actions.
Mr. Mohammad has generously shared his knowledge with students and instructors alike, helping all of us become better judoka. His willingness to encourage others, offer thoughtful guidance, and contribute to our dojo reflects the very principles that Jigoro Kano envisioned for judo: mutual welfare and benefit.
It is with great respect and admiration that we congratulate Mr. Mohammad on earning his Shodan. This promotion is a well-deserved recognition of not only his technical ability, but also the humility, integrity, and servant leadership he brings to our judo family.
